For many years, Tulsa Public Schools has partnered with Amplify Youth Health Collective, Youth Services of Tulsa, and the Tulsa Health Department PREP program to provide the Positive Prevention Plus curriculum to students in middle and high school. This board-approved curriculum is scientifically accurate and evidence-based and provides students with the knowledge they need to make healthy decisions about their bodies. 

Are students required to participate in this curriculum?

No. It is up to each parent to decide whether their child can participate in Positive Prevention Plus lessons. Parents can click here for an opt-out form. Parents can opt-out at any point during the 13-lesson program.

How can parents learn about what is included in the Positive Prevention Plus curriculum?

We want to empower parents and guardians to make informed decisions about their child’s participation in the program. Before the lessons begin:

• Parents receive information from their child’s school directly;
• Each school hosts a parent preview night before classes begin; and
• Parents can also learn about the curriculum online.

My child is in middle/high school. Why haven’t I received any information about this curriculum?

We provide this program at various schools between September and May; high schools typically schedule during the fall, and middle schools typically schedule during the spring. The schedule varies year to year.

Why does Tulsa Public Schools provide this curriculum?

The State of Oklahoma has the fourth-highest teen birth rate in the country. In Tulsa County, however, teen birth rates have significantly declined after the expansion of evidence-based teen sexual health programs and services like Positive Prevention Plus.

The Positive Prevention Plus curriculum has proven outcomes that reduce or delay sexual activity, increase the use of condoms/contraception if individuals are sexually active, and increase parent/child communication in the home about these topics. 

What is included in the Positive Prevention Plus curriculum?

This evidence-based curriculum provides students with the knowledge necessary to reduce their risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and teen pregnancy. The curriculum includes the discussion of abstinence as the only 100% effective method of prevention.
