Gabby Holmes is a senior at Daniel Webster High School and has been working toward her cosmetology license through concurrent enrollment with Tulsa Tech.

“I go to Tulsa Tech for the first half of my school day and I really like it. I’ve always liked the creativity that comes with doing my own hair and nails, that’s how my interest in cosmetology first started. Now that I’m actually in the program, not only have I gotten even better at hair and nail service, but I’m also learning to do other things like eyelashes.” 

Gabby hopes to bring these skills to future clients by opening her own shop in the future. 

While Gabby has fond memories of her time at Robertson Elementary, some of her favorite memories are from Webster’s homecoming.

“I’ve always really liked the homecoming parades! Students decorate floats every year and show them off in the circle drive out in front of the school. We get to hang out and see all of their creations. It’s a lot of fun.”

Gabby feels like she has developed a special connection with Webster Dean of Students Amanda Clements. 

“I’ve known her since 6th grade… She’s not a traditional classroom teacher, but it’s really great having someone here who I’ve known– and who has known me– for so long. I know I can go to her for anything.” 

Gabby’s advice to rising seniors is to take it one step at a time: “It might feel a little scary knowing that once you graduate you’ll be on your own, but as long as you get your work done on time and you don’t let yourself fall behind, you’ll be fine!

“You’re turning into an adult. If you want something, you need to step up and make it happen for yourself. You can’t sit around waiting for anyone else to do it for you, even your parents. Obviously they are always rooting for you and will help you, but you have to decide to do it. It’s really up to you.”

She says already being licensed in cosmetology when she graduates from high school puts her a step ahead in her cosmetology career.

“I’m still exploring my options for what will come after high school graduation. I’m considering continuing into barbering school or even going to Tulsa Community College. But for right now, my goal is to have my cosmetology license by the end of May!”

Gabby Holmes es una estudiante del último grado en Daniel Webster High School y ha estado trabajando para obtener su licencia de cosmetología a través de la inscripción simultanea de Tulsa Tech.

“Estoy yendo a Tulsa Tech durante la primera parte de mi día de escuela y la verdad es que me encanta. Siempre me ha gustado la creatividad que tengo al arreglarme mi pelo y uñas, y así fue como inició mi interés por la cosmetología. Ahora, que actualmente estoy en el programa, no solo he mejorado en el trabajo con el cabello y uñas, sino también he aprendido otras cosas como trabajar con las pestañas.”

Gabby espera llevar todas estas habilidades a sus futuros clientes y abrir su propio negocio en el futuro.

Mientras Gabby ha creado memorias agradables durante su tiempo en Robertson Elementary, algunos de sus recuerdos vienen del homecoming de Webster.

“¡Siempre me han gustado los desfiles del homecoming! Los estudiantes decoran los carros alegóricos cada año y los presumen en la rotonda frente a la escuela. Tenemos la oportunidad de estar juntos y ver todas las creaciones de los demás. ¡Es muy divertido!.

Gabby siente que ha desarrollado una conexión especial con la decana de estudiantes de Webster, Amanda Clements.

“La conozco desde que estaba en sexto grado… Ella no es una maestra tradicional de salón de clases, pero es muy agradable tener a alguien que conozco, y que me conoce, por ya bastante tiempo.

Gabby comparte como consejo para todos los graduados que se tomen un día a la vez: “¡Suena un poco loco pensar que una vez que te gradúes vas a salir al mundo tu solo, pero mientras entregues tu trabajo a tiempo y no te atrases, de seguro que estarás bien!”.

“Uno se está convirtiendo en adulto. Si quieres algo, necesitas levantarte y hacer que suceda para ti mismo. No te puedes quedar sentado para que alguien más lo haga por ti, incluyendo a tus padres. Obviamente ellos siempre estarán ahí apoyándote y ayudándote, pero eres tú  quien decide hacerlo. Realmente es tu propia decisión!”

Ella comenta que tener su licencia de cosmetología cuando se gradúe de la preparatoria le ayuda a estar un paso adelante en su carrera como cosmetóloga.

“Aún sigo explorando mis opciones para ver que sigue después de graduarme de la preparatoria. Estoy considerando continuar con la carrera de estilista o incluso ir a Tulsa Community College. Pero por ahora, mi meta es tener mi licencia de cosmetología para finales de mayo!”.
